MOVIE MAGIC: Lessons from a Sensible Cock

 In A thought, Projects

I was lucky enough to shadow Michael Grossman in the direction of the short film “Sensibilities.” I can honestly say seeing him work really helped me map out some key strategies on movie making. He has an amorphous way of working where all the storyboarding and shot lists are in his head. Which is how I like to operate, one because it allows me to be more flexible when creating shots or when things change, but also I’m not the best in trying to illustrate my visions onto paper though I have done it in the past. Michael really had a laser focus when it came to what kind of shots he wanted. And his efficiency in getting those shots was pretty impressive. We had a FANTASTIC crew and things were rolling so well, but also the way he managed to make quick and silent executive decisions in his head the ultimately helped in the production was fascinating to watch. Real-time calculations of where to move people, equipment, or change things in the script, all while never showing signs of uncertainty or turmoil. I value that highly in a director, the ability to move in a way where your vision becomes real while also not having to worry about crew morale taking any hits. It was an honor and a pleasure to work in one of his productions and ill be excited to be in more in the future and also to lead my own crew and production.
