Remember to dream a little

 In A thought

Scanning old 35mm negatives and a couple of memories showed up in celluloid. Two visits to the same beach on different days with different women. The image above is the two brought together. I left the scratches in the film because in my opinion, it worked better with them than without. The photos are from long ago, before some of the people in the office at 4381 were even around.

Looking back at the negatives, I noticed that the images I shot with one were completely different than I shot with the other. Different all the way down to the film stock I chose to use.

It was not a conscious decision on my part at the time. I was merely responding subconsciously to the feeling or mood of the situation. With one it was color, high speed, grainy and harsh. With the other, it was black and white, fine grain or sometimes halo inducing infrared.

As filmmakers, this decision should be a very conscious one. I was in L.A. for a few weeks with no idea of the story I was telling. I was simply there responding to the situations unfolding and my images reflect that. The script hadn’t been written, the budget hadn’t been set and the female leads hated each other.

This post is rambling, the point I set out to make has been lost on the way. I will however try to summarize it as if everything made sense along the way.

  1. Know your story.
  2. Discover the best ways to tell it.
  3. Know your audience.
  4. Have a plan for everything and a map to follow.
  5. Be flexible.
  6. Remember to dream a little and push yourself to always create something you can be proud of, that tests and sharpens your skills.

That about sums it up. Thanks for reading.
