Making a German Expressionist Film
For this project, our challenge was to create a short film using 16-lines provided to us, making a story around it and choosing a specific genre to film this idea with. Our group chose German Expressionism because it seemed challenging and something that had not previously been executed by former groups. I was familiar with many of the techniques however, attempting to manipulate these on screen proved to be a challenge. Many of the sets and shadows are painted on and made to look theatrical. It was a tedious process attempting to cut paper to manipulate the appearance of shadows and shapes however, my group was able to come up with inventive ways to get this done.
Ultimately, we discovered new techniques, new ways to use lighting, to film shots and to manipulate the set. I am excited to see how we apply these in future projects.
